The Herd

The sheep grazed quietly on a large farmland. It was a beautiful afternoon, with sunny, clear skies. Birds rested on trees, occasionally chirping and fluttering their wings. The shepherd was lazily scrolling through his phone, lifting his eyes every now and then to make sure the herd was still there. After a while, he got up and walked behind the sheep, herding them to a greener area so they could eat more. He sat down under a tree and scrolled through TikTok, laughing at cringe-worthy videos of people overreacting to horror games and playing horrible pranks on others in the name of “trends.”

As he looked up, he saw that the sheep were looking at him. At first, he felt weird, but when he noticed that they had consumed all the grass in that area, he scoffed and rolled his eyes before getting up from his comfortable spot again. “Stupid herd, fifty of you, and none of you have the brains to move on and find a new grazing spot,” he barked angrily. As they were walking to another spot, the skies started getting darker. He checked his phone for weather updates: "Clear skies with no chance of rain."

“Weird,” he thought to himself and kept moving, the sheep in front and the shepherd behind them, as usual, looking at his phone. He suddenly bumped into one of the sheep, dropping his phone on the grass. He angrily picked it up and looked up to see all fifty sheep facing him, staring into his eyes. Unnerved by this, he looked around and realized that the place was unfamiliar. Upon closer inspection, his gaze fell upon a rock statue nearby. It looked like a deity of some sort, something he had never seen before. He went closer and realized it had the body of a man and the head of a sheep. “What the heck,” he said quietly with a shocked expression.

“You stupid man,” a combination of many voices echoed from behind him. His expression faded as he turned around to see the sheep still staring at him. “You didn't herd us; we brought you here,” the sheep said eerily. They now seemed to be looking at something behind him as they said, “Here is your sacrifice, master.” His heart was beating so fast he thought it would tear through his chest. He had seen too many horror movies to know he should run, but his legs didn't work. Expecting to face his death, he slowly turned around to face the statue. It was still as a rock. Nothing had changed; it hadn't come to life with the intention of eating him. It was still a statue.

Confused by this, he turned to the sheep, expecting them to talk some more and maybe give him some answers, but the sheep weren't staring at him anymore. They weren’t talking anymore. The sky was bright and sunny again. Nothing felt eerie, and nothing felt out of place as he watched his sheep graze quietly on the large farmland.
